Richard Dawkins says Christianity is ‘bulwark against something worse’

Richard Dawkins on religion

A 2010 quote from Kenyan born British author, academic and atheist Richard Dawkins, is being widely shared around social media in which he admits that Christianity may actually be the best defense against extremist ideologies which threaten the world.

“There are no Christians, as far as I know, blowing up buildings,” Dawkins said. “I am not aware of any Christian suicide bombers. I am not aware of any major Christian denomination that believes the penalty for apostasy is death.”

The quote appears to compare the peaceful teachings of Jesus Christ to the atrocities committed by followers of radical Islam. Because of this, Dawkins ponders whether Christianity might actually be the antidote to protect western civilisation against jihad.

“I have mixed feelings about the decline of Christianity, in so far as Christianity might be a bulwark against something worse,” he said.
