The UK government has invited contractors to apply for funds to generate solar power for three villages in Turkana County.

The project, funded through the Department for International Development (DFID) and implemented by Barclays Bank of Kenya, is an attempt at promote the use of solar power in remote regions not connected to the national electricity grid.

The project has invited the contractors to apply for the finance to enable them to purchase and install a Solar PV Hybrid mini-grids in the villages of Lolupe, Nadwat and Katabol.

Successful bidders will have the opportunity to recoup their investment through a build, own and operate model.

This initiative is a departure from the traditional model where government-owned Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) generates power which is transmitted by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco), before Kenya Power supplies and sells the power to end users.
