British number one women’s tennis player, Johanna Konta, has knocked her childhood hero Venus Williams out of the Australian Open.
The first round match between the Australian born unseeded Brit, who became a UK citizen in 2012, against number 8 seed and former world number one ended 6-4 6-2.
Williams, the seven-time grand slam champion had a heavily strapped thigh, and she appeared to be struggling from the start, losing her serve at 1-1.
Konta took the first set in 41 minutes, and then saw off Williams 5-0 in the second. The match was over in less than 1 hour and 20 minutes.
World number 47 Konta will now face Germany’s Carina Witthoeft or Saisai Zhang in the second round.
