Global pop superstar Madonna Madonna Ciccone is currently in Kenya, and has already spent time visiting Africa’s largest slum in Nairobi and meeting Kenyan First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta.
The 57-year-old seven-time Grammy Award-winner, actress and pop culture icon is a founder of Raising Malawi and a Goodwill Ambassador for Child Welfare and is in the country with daughter Lourdes, 18 and son Rocco, 15, whose father is British filmmaker Guy Ritchie.
She has covered her visit to Kibra, also known as Kibera, as a guest of Shining Hope for Communities via her Instagram account.
The organisation links free schools for girls to essential services for communities like clean water, and free health care.
During her time in Kibera, she met Mama Sofie, who Madonna described as an “Amazing Woman” who lives in a 10 by 10 dwelling in the slum with her 14 children, 2 of which areadopted. Her husband was killed in a political uprising, but she is now starting her own business with the help of Shining Hope for Communities.
Later, she paid a visit to Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta where she learned about the First Lady’s Beyond Zero Campaign which targets eliminating maternal and child mortality in Kenya and hopes to join forces to promote Female Empowerment.
