The UK Rhino Charge, smaller brother of the famous Kenyan event, took place on Sunday (24 September) at a new venue after a disappointing number of paid up and fully sponsored entries necessitated a change from the usual course at Hook Farm.
Run annually and usually in September, the UK Rhino Charge is open to all 4x4s and does not require the same level of preparation or off-road experience as is necessary to compete in the Kenyan Rhino Charge.
Any well equipped vehicle and crew can enter and team work is often more important than anything else if they are to succeed in the many and varied tasks involved in the day’s competition. Previous winners have driven vehicles as diverse as a Land Rover 110 and a Suzuki Vitara.
Although this year organisers could not hold a full on UK Rhino Charge, the renamed Rhino Fun Trial was enjoyed by all who came. The autumn sun shone and according to the UK Rhino Charge Facebook Page, “Sandy Choda entertained with his driving style, a 110 High Capapcity pick-up won, things got broken, people got lost, a Freelander and a Honda CRV both entered and did well, people got stuck and fun was had by all, raising money for Rhino Ark in the process.”
