On Sunday, Irish ambassador to Kenya Dr Vincent O’Neill opened a new wing at St Patrick’s Primaty School in Kawese, which is funded by Irish Charity Kenyan Child Foundation.

Photos posted to social media of him travelling to the school in an ox cart, after rains made the roads impassible, received a positive response by Kenyans some of whom praised his ‘down to earth’ character.

Posting about his experience on Twitter, Dr O’Neill said: “Privileged to open wing of St Patrick’s Primary School Kawese, Mukeini County today following support from Irish organization Kenya Child Foundation. Access to the school difficult due to recent rains / muddy road no problem via Ox Cart !”

St Patrick’s Primary School is the first project of the Kenyan Child Foundation whose mission is to bring Primary School Education to the Children of Kenya, with a particular focus on those most disadvantaged in the community.

The charity’s relationship with Machakos County came about in the market town of Sultan Hamud, where they were initially involved on an outreach programme during the summer of 2014.

Their objective is to take action by fostering connections, working alongside the local people and fundraising for a new primary school, something which is now a reality.
