British television presenter Michaela Strachan has become the latest celebrity to name Kenya as one of her most memorable holiday destinations.
Michaela is a well known TV presenter who has appeared on a variety of shows since 1986 including The Wide Awake Club, The Hitman And Her, The Really Wild Show, Michaela’s Wild Challenge, Elephant Diaries and Springwatch. Although she started off presenting children’s programmes, these days she is better known as a wildlife presenter which has taken her all over the world filming animals and conservation projects.
Discussing her ‘holidays of a lifetime’ in a Daily Mail article, the former Countryfile presenter discussed a childhood trip to Kenya as the first vacation she could remember:
“When I was ten we went to Kenya, which in 1976 was exotic,” she said.
“It was a pivotal trip for me and gave me a lifelong love for Africa. It seemed so wonderful to be sitting on top of a jeep with my parents and brother Gary looking for lions, hippos, crocodiles and elephants. Our base was the famous Treetops, which is where Princess Elizabeth was staying in 1952 when she was told her father had died and that she would accede to the Throne.”
Michaela now lives in Hout Bay, Cape Town with her partner Nic Chevallier and their son Oliver but perhaps surprisingly for someone who has spent a lot of her career around wildlife, she is allergic to elephants.
She is a celebrity supporter of the charity World Vision as a child sponsor and also supports their Alternative Gifts charity; life-changing gifts for communities in the developing world.
