Noma Dumezweni, the actress who plays Hermione Granger in the two-part stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, has said that US President Donald Trump would not be welcome at the Broadway show.
The Tony nominated actress was born in Swaziland to South African parents, and after living in Botswana, Kenya and Uganda, arrived in England as a refugee in 1977. She settled in Felixstowe where she was educated, before moving to London with her mother and sister.
Some found her casting in the role made famous by Emma Watson in the movies controversial, before author JK Rowling explained that she never made the character’s ethnicity explicit in the original novels.
Her comments about the American President came during an appearance on the Tony Awards 2018 red carpet. When asked if Trump should see the show, she responded with a decisive “No. Anybody else, yes.”
