While a delegation from Kenya are attending the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference in London, UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey has been discussing how the British government is supporting the fight to protect the country’s endangered wildlife.
The two-day London conference, which started yesterday (11 October), is being hosted by the British government, bringing together global leaders to help eradicate illegal wildlife trade and better protect the world’s most iconic species from the threat of extinction.
In his video, Mr Hailey reiterates that tackling the illegal wildlife trade is a big priority for the British government.
Through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund, the UK has funded nine projects worth over £2 million to combat the unlawful wildlife trade in Kenya.
This funding has been used to train rangers, border force agents and prosecutors; support legislative reform to increase conviction rates and penalties for wildlife crimes. It has also helped communities to manage their wildlife and benefit from it through tourism.
